PRAXIS
The message that society is sending women must be changed. Objectification of women pervades today's media, which over-emphasizes physical appearance, provides celebrity idols for young wome, and purports happiness in cosmetic modification and beauty-related products.
In my work, I seek to address the issues of female appearance by focusing on a woman's belief that they have to use their body in a sexual manner to succeed and feel accepted in society and the workplace. My prints focus on the parts of a woman's body that are generally sexualized, and most commonly enhanced. While I do believe that a woman has the right to do what they want to feel happy and confident, I feel women also have an obligation to question the factors influencing these choices.
I designed the shirts with a particular chain restaurant in mind, where women are commonly sexualized and required to wear sexualized uniforms.
The pizza boxes all have phrases on them that can be used to describe food, but could easily be interpereted in a sexualized manner. These messages take on a deeper meaning as an object when paired with imagery of a woman's lips.
