PRAXIS
Today, 1 in 68 children are diagnosed on the autism spectrum. Of that, boys are five times more likely to have autism. It is the fastest growing serious developmental disability in the United States, and costs an average family $60,000 a year. Most of these families cannot afford the extra out-of-pocket costs, and instead must rely on insurance.
I work as an ABA trainer with a severely autistic girl, and am very passionate about the impact art makes on her life. I can only imagine how it can affect others. My goal for this project is to raise awareness by creating a series of art works representing the life and everyday tasks of an individual with severe autism.
The boxes show the stacks upon stacks of puzzle boxes that the girl I work with owns. I find something unique in the organized chaos of how they are stored, so the display of these objects needed to reflect that.
The sheet demonstrates the uniqueness of her set of conditions. She enjoys the sensation of being covered in a large sheet, which is uncommon in Autism Spectrum Disorder. This is contrasted with the fact that she, along with many people with autism, walks on her tip-toes, as is shown through use of blue footprints.
